Cardiff has become a hotspot for car manufacturers to showcase their latest offerings, and BYD is the latest brand to roll into town. As part of their marketing push, BYD is bringing their range of electric and hybrid vehicles to cities across the UK, and I decided to take the plunge and experience their showcase firsthand.
Scrolling through Instagram, I often see ads from car manufacturers inviting people to test drive their cars. Normally, I scroll past these as they often feel like a prelude to a high-pressure sales pitch. However, BYD’s ad caught my eye—perhaps it was their innovative designs or the buzz around their vehicles. I decided to book a slot, and within a few hours, I found myself at The Village Hotel in Cardiff, ready to test drive a BYD Seal.
The Setup
The Village Hotel seems to be a popular venue for these events, likely due to its convenient location near the M4. BYD had transformed a section of the car park with banners and a line-up of their vehicles, creating an impressive and professional atmosphere. Before arriving, I had to obtain a DVLA code to confirm my driving licence details—a quick and simple process.
Having driven the BYD Seal at the Everything Electric South event earlier this year, I was eager to get behind the wheel again, this time in more familiar surroundings. You can read about my first impressions of the Seal and other EVs I tested at that event here.
The Test Drive Experience
After completing some paperwork inside, we were handed the keys and given up to an hour for the test drive. In reality, once the formalities and vehicle introductions were done, the driving time was closer to 40 minutes, which still felt generous. BYD provided a suggested route but were happy for us to choose our own, which was great for exploring local roads.
Interestingly, someone from BYD joined us for the drive in the Seal. This was due to a prior incident where two test drivers raced and damaged vehicles, so a chaperone was now required for some models. Honestly, I didn’t mind. Our guide was knowledgeable, encouraged us to experiment with different driving modes, and answered all our questions without making us feel rushed or pressured.
No Hard Sell—Just a Showcase
One of my biggest concerns with these events is the fear of a hard sell. Thankfully, BYD’s approach was refreshingly different. There was no obligation to buy, no pressure to sign up for anything, and the team was genuinely friendly and helpful. Their main goal seemed to be getting as many people as possible to experience their vehicles firsthand.
After our test drive, we were invited to try other models if we had time, but unfortunately, our schedule didn’t allow for it. It was clear, though, that BYD wanted us to leave with a positive impression of their cars rather than a sales pitch.
Final Thoughts
Overall, the BYD showcase event was a fantastic experience. It’s clear that BYD is determined to make a name for themselves in the UK market, and events like this are a great way to build interest and trust. If you’ve ever been curious about BYD or electric vehicles in general, I highly recommend attending one of their showcases. You might be as pleasantly surprised as I was by the quality, features, and overall experience.
